Year 8 Media – Codes and Conventions
Course Outline – Time: 10 weeks
This term outline is a year 8 Media introductory unit. Students will learn what media is and how it is constructed for society. Students will keep a portfolio of all activities completed in class, along with any research and observations they find in their own time. Students will study and be exposed to the symbolic, written, audio and technical codes and convention involved in media creation. This will be done in context with film genre, target audience and stereotypes. Students will study a selected film in class and then in groups present a 10-15 minute presentation on how these codes and conventions were used within the film to represent genre, attract a target audience and create stereotypes. Following this the students will use what they have learnt to create their own poster for an original film of their creation. An important element of this assessment will include student’s ability to identify how they will use media codes and conventions in their poster to stipulate genre and attract their target audience. The student’s final assessment will be an in-class test on their understanding of the concepts studied throughout the term.
Aims
At the completion of this unit students should:
- Be able to identify and basically describe how symbolic, written, audio and technical (SWAT) codes are used in Media works.

- Identify the common stereotypes used in media works and have a basic understanding of their influences in society.
Consequently, the overall aim of this unit is for students to gain a basic understanding of the processes of Media production.
