1.      Students will demonstrate knowledge of target audience.

2.      Students will demonstrate knowledge of media codes and conventions and how they are used in relation to target audiences.

3.      Students will gain basic understanding of the layout and structure of film posters.

5 mins

Introduce what we will be working on today - Learning about the creation & construction of posters and, in effect, film advertising.

15 mins           

Analyse 2 examples of posters (projected on screen) with the class.

20 mins 

Split the class into 3 groups and have each group analyse 2 posters. They will identify:

            1) Target audience and genre

            2) How they know, e.g. how codes conventions have been used.

15mins

Discuss group findings as a class.

Sample questions:

·         What target audience do you think this film is intended for? How do you know?

·         What codes and conventions have been used?? (Technical: Angles, framing, lighting, SFX. Symbolic: Setting, costume, appearance, lighting. Written: Title, slogan, font, size).

·         What do the posters have in common? What is different? Why do you think the they are the same/different?

Pack away. Collect student work.

·         White board           

·         White board markers

·         Spare paper (for students if needed)

·         Spare pens (for students if needed)

·         2x large movie posters

·         5 copies of 2x A4 movie posters

 

1.      Students learning will be monitored informally through discussion and observation.

2.      Student learning will also be monitored through portfolio entries.

Behaviours to watch include:

·         Off topic conversation

·         Students not writing.

·         Students not participating with their group.

Any of these behaviours could mean that the students is either not understanding the work or not engaging with the topic.

  1. Students will develop and write a short synopsis for an original film.
  2. Students will create and identify a main character for their film, and write a brief description.
  3. Students will outline the target audience for their film and identify 3+ ways in which they will advertise their film for this audience.

15 mins

Brain storm with students what they have learned so far this term and explain what we will be doing: 

-          Develop an idea for a film aimed at a particular audience (of students’ choice).

-          Outline a main character for your film and their attributes.

-          Choose a genre for your film. Considering the genre of your film, identify 3+ ways you will use media codes and conventions to promote/advertise this film to your target audience.

(Students will be given worksheets to help guide them).

10mins

Class discussion of poster on screen. Focus questions:

  • Looking at the picture, what do you think the film is about?
  • Who do you think is the antagonist and protagonist? How do you know?
  • What is the genre? How do you know?

15 mins

Students will work on the storyline for their film. It must have a standard storyline progression (introduction, problem, climax, resolution, and conclusion).

15 mins

Students will work on their character description.

5 mins

Pack away time. Collect student work

  • White board   
  • White board markers

  • Spare paper (for students if needed)
  • Spare pens (for students if needed)

 

  1. Students learning will be monitored informally through general classroom observation.
  2. Students learning will also be monitored more formally through collection and marking is completed worksheets.
  3. Students learning will also be assessed formally through portfolio checks.

Behaviours to watch:

  • Off topic conversation between students.
  • Worksheets not being filled in.
  • Lack of attention to task

These behaviours may mean the students does not understand the task or is not engaged with it. Consequently, I may need to change the next lesson, to work on the information again in a different way.
